Dunne manager considers next move after Trujillo demolition

BERNARD DUNNE’S manager, Brian Peters, returned from the US last night to weigh up his options for the Dubliner’s next bout following his first round demolition of rookie Erik Trujillo in Las Vegas at the weekend.

Dunne manager considers next move after Trujillo demolition

“One thing’s for sure it will be a six rounder. He has served his apprenticeship and there are a few possibilities,” he said.

“We are looking for someone who will provide a worthwhile challenge.”

In Las Vegas Dunne faced an unknown quantity in Trujillo abut he had him on the floor three times before Tony Weeks stopped the contest after just two minutes.

Dunne had caught him with a big right hand after 30 seconds and things looked ominous for the Colorado Golden Gloves champion.

Trujillo came back with a big right but Dunne shipped the punch well and went on to finish off his opponent with a left hook that put him down for a second time and then a double right.

“He did everything we could have asked of him and he reacted correctly when Trujillo landed that right,” his trainer, Freddie Roach, said.

Freddie, taking time off from preparing Mike Tyson for his clash with Clifford Etienne, said it was now time to get him somebody who would make him work for a few rounds.

His next fight is planned for Orange County on March 7 and Brian Peters is hoping to find a suitable opponent.

“He did not have much time to display his talents but the Americans liked what they saw,” the Dunshaughlin businessman said. “We had expected more from Trujillo. He had a very good amateur record - 56 wins out of 60 fights - but Ben dealt with him so well.”

He won praise from Wayne McCullough who took time away from preparing for his fight against Scott Harrison in Glasgow on March 22 to help with the ringside commentary and described Dunne, who celebrated his 23rd birthday on Thursday, as the best fighter to come out of Ireland in the last few years.”

Dunne will return to Dublin at the weekend and will attend the finals of the national senior boxing championships on Friday night week before returning to Los Angeles to put the finishing touches to preparations for his next bout.

Dunne, who is now promoted by Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing trains in Los Angeles at Freddie Roach’s world famous Wild Card Gym.

“We will be looking for a suitable opponent so that he can progress a stage further,” Brian Peters said. “We just need to provide him with the experience of boxing opponents of varying heights and different styles.”
