Injury blow as Powerbids to stretch record
The Clareman is under treatment for a recurrence of the back injury that caused him to miss the London Marathon last April and a possible Olympic place in Athens.
He had since notched a few notable victories and heralded his arrival back at the top flight by winning the national half marathon title in Castlebar. But then it all went wrong again.
“I just work up one morning and there it was ... back again,” he said.
“There appears to be inflammation in my lower back that’s affecting my leg. I have missed three weeks of training. I have only been doing a bit of jogging but I have been to a chiropractor and am getting physiotherapy.
“I would like to think I will be competitive enough to challenge for the inter-counties title in Dungarvan at the end of November. I should probably have taken more care. When things are going well you are inclined to throw caution to the wind.”
After the national championships he was invited to compete in the Great North Run and had his flight booked when all this happened.
“I was going so well I would have liked to run there. There were other races I had planned but I had to miss them also,” he admitted.
Having to miss this year’s London Marathon was a huge disappointment to Power, who had prepared diligently for a serious attempt at the Olympic qualifying standard.
“I had put so much into it, I had sacrificed so much and then, one day, it was all over.”
