Murray, from Firhouse, Co. Dublin actually qualified on pole but was edged out by race winner, Jason Templemartin.

However, it was another disappointing race for the Irish drivers contesting the Formula Renault UK Championship. In a race won by former karting sensation, Lewis Hamilton (Manor Motorsport) from Fortec driver, Danny Watts, Gary Turkington was the best placed Irish driver in ninth. Matthew Griffin came home in twelfth place and Philip Kershaw was 20th. James Murphy retired on lap thirteen.

Scotsman Steve Hislop tightened his grip on the British Superbike Championship with a double victory in the 10th round of the season at Cadwell Park.

The MonsterMob Ducati rider dominated all weekend as he responded to criticism from team boss Paul Bird, who had claimed his rider was ‘‘too generous’’ to his rivals.

Hislop answered that with a blistering lap to claim pole position for the first time since April’s second round and then maintained that pace in today’s two races, run in changeable conditions at the Lincolnshire circuit.

Shane Byrne took the early initiative in the opening 18-lap race but the Renegade Ducati rider was unable to shake off Hislop, who overcame early worries over the balance of his bike.

Hislop took the lead at half distance, charging round the outside on the run into Park Corner, and consolidated his advantage with four fastest laps in six attempts.

His second double win of the season extended Hislop’s advantage over Virgin Mobile Yamaha rider Sean Emmett, who claimed a fifth and a sixth, to 48 points with three rounds remaining.
