Runner Kelley dies

One of the greatest legends in marathon running, Johnny Kelley of Boston, has died, aged 97.

Twice winner of the Boston marathon, Kelley ran the race an amazing 61 times, failing to finish on just three occasions.

Kelley, who also ran in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, won Boston in 1935 and again in 1945. He finished second a record seven times, and had 18 finishes in the top ten.

In 1993 a statue was dedicated in Kelley’s honour at the base of one of the famous Newton Hills on the Boston route.
