Talented Taylor to top the bill in boxing extravaganza

KATIE TAYLOR, Ireland’s latest boxing sensation, will top the bill at a show in the Edel Quinn Hall in Kanturk on November 30, it was confirmed yesterday

Dan Lane, who is organising the show which is promoted by Rylane Boxing club as part of their Silver Jubilee celebrations, said they were looking forward to staging Ireland's first ladies boxing contest down south.

"We had intended bringing her down last year but we were unable to find a suitable opponent," he said. Taylor has won all of her five official contests to date four inside the distance. And the only woman to go the distance with the 17-year-old Dubliner, Candy Berry from England, has been pencilled in as a possible opponent for Kanturk.

"After that contest she requested a rematch with Katie and that might now take place in Cork," Katie's father, Peter, said yesterday.

"But while we would like to stage the rematch in Kanturk we have been looking for a shot at the English ABA champion and if we can get that for Cork so much the better."

Katie has also proved her sporting credentials outside the ring. She has been capped for Ireland's soccer teams up to senior level and captained the Irish team at the recent European Youth Olympics in Paris where they lost out on the bronze medals on penalties to France.

Since then she has travelled with the senior squad to Portugal where she scored three goals in two friendlies.

Her teeth were damaged on the first day but she continued to play despite the stitches in her mouth.

Next week she will travel to the European U19 championships in Macedonia. "She is an exceptional footballer and she loves the game," her father said. "But if it came to a choice between soccer and boxing, I am afraid she would choose boxing."

Over the past 25 years Rylane Boxing Club has staged tournaments throughout Cork from Macroom to Bantry. They promoted the Ireland-Wales international in Millstreet and drew an attendance of 2,000 to The Green Glens Arena when they brought over a team from West Ham on a night when 1996 Olympian, Francie Barrett, topped the bill.

They also promoted last year's very successful Four Nations Championships at the Gleneagle Complex in Killarney and will be involved again when the multi-nations tournament is staged in Cork early in November.
