Nugent beaten in Irish Open Women’s Tennis Championship

Dubliner Karen Nugent’s bid for glory in the final of the Irish Open Women’s Tennis Championship, was shattered by Australian teenager, Dubravka Cupac, at the Castleknock Club, Dublin on Saturday.

Cupac's all-court game had Nugent in trouble from the beginning when the visitor’s returns enabled her to break the Dubliner’s serve in the opening game of the match.

Subsequently, it was a case of good returns by Cupac and powerful forehands off the ground that caused Nugent the most trouble.

Nugent, to her credit, picked up two games just as a second set whitewash seemed in prospect. She trailed 0-5 in that second set but finished up a 6-2 6-2 loser.
