Power, Scanlon get Olympic places

Mark Scanlon and Ciarán Power will be Ireland’s two representatives in the Olympic Road Race.

The selectors met last evening to choose the two representatives and, while there will not be an official announcement from Cycling Ireland until the middle of the week, Mark Scanlon and Ciarán Power were the two being mentioned after last evening’s national championships in Sligo.

Mark Scanlon could not defend his title yesterday as he is putting the finishing touches to his preparations for the Tour de France, but his total UCI points make him a virtual certainty.

The second place was between several riders but Ciarán Power’s decision to ride in last week’s Tour of Canada was critical. He won a stage in that race and finished 10th overall to pick up 40 UCI points.

Power competed in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney alongside David McCann.
