FBD becomes sole sponsor of RÁS
While it is a major change in cash terms it is a minor change in terms of re-branding, for FBD Insurance has been associated with the event for almost half of its 53 year history.
“This is one of the longest and most established sports sponsorships in the country and we are delighted that FBD is now assuming title sponsorship,” Race Organiser, Dermot Dignam, said. He said they faced a monumental challenge when the UCI this year set new financial standards for international races.
“It actually jeopardised the prospects of many well-known events throughout the world and Europe, in particular,” he said.
“Irish cycling was fortunate in having the support of FBD Insurance, which greatly increased its sponsorship to meet the challenge and secure the future of this great race.”
Over the years Philip Fitzsimons, Adrian Taheny and the FBD network throughout the country have become synonymous with the race and at yesterday’s announcement Philip Fitzsimons, FBD Insurance Chief Executive, said they were proud to be associated with an event that was steeped in tradition.
“Our long association with the RAS has been a positive one for us as well as for Irish cycling,” he said. “We are happy to avail of the opportunity to become sole sponsor. The RAS attracts the interest of young and old for eight days every May.”
The 2005 event gets under way in Dublin on Sunday, May 22, and will finish a week later on the traditional circuit around The Phoenix Park.
