Scheffler: If PGA of America want my input on Ryder Cup they can call me

Scottie Scheffler says he thinks US Ryder Cup captain for 2027 Jim Furyk is going to do a great job.

World number one Scottie Scheffler has told the PGA of America if they would like his input into Ryder Cup decisions, they are welcome to call him.

Scheffler gave his backing to the reappointment of Jim Furyk to lead the team at Adare Manor next year following criticism of the move after he oversaw a humiliating 17.5 to 10.5 defeat at Le Golf National in Paris in 2018.

It came after Tiger Woods turned down the role earlier this month after being arrested and charged with driving under the influence having rolled his car in Florida, and was generally viewed as underwhelming as it highlighted the lack of options available to the United States.

Scheffler, ahead of the Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral in Miami, was asked whether he had any input into the decision.

"No, I have no input at all. Would I like to have input? If they want me to have input, then I can have input," said the world number one, whose first Ryder Cup appearance was in 2021.

"But the PGA of America runs the Ryder Cup, and it's not the PGA Tour, it's not the players, so if they want my opinion, they've got my phone number, I'm sure.

"Jim is a really good leader. He's extremely organised in the way he does things. I think he brings a lot of knowledge and experience to the table and I think he's going to do a great job."

Scheffler heads into the tournament after two runner-up finishes to Rory McIlroy at the Masters and Matt Fitzpatrick at the RBC Heritage.

The world number two and three, plus three other top-15 players, are missing this week despite it being a Signature Event with a no 36-hole cut, a $20m (€17m) prize fund and $3.6m for the winner.

McIlroy still has some way to go to catch Scheffler in the world rankings but leads his rival six-to-four in majors and the American is fully appreciative of his qualities.

"When you look at just his (McIlroy's) game specifically I think his ability to drive the ball is the best that I've seen," Scheffler added.

"He's able to take out certain things on some golf courses that not many players can do. Another thing is his longevity.

"It's hard to have an understanding of what it takes to remain at the top for as long as he has when you don't see it each week.

"When you look at when he won his first major championship to now, 2011 was maybe his first one, so for him to still be at the top of the game for this long is quite impressive."

Scheffler played the pro-am with Cadillac's Formula One drivers Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez as part of a tie-in with this weekend's Miami Grand Prix.

"I got to talk with Checo (Perez) a little bit about some different stuff," he said.

"I don't know a ton about the Formula One but it was really interesting to hear things from his perspective about how he prepares for events.

"I like seeing what makes people tick, I feel like you can be learning all the time, no matter who it is."
