Matthew gives Europe two-point lead

Europe moved into a 10-8 lead after Catriona Matthew’s dominant victory followed Cristie Kerr’s withdrawal on the final day of the Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle.

The three-time LPGA winner won 6&5 against Paula Creamer after the American missed a putt at the 13th.

Matthew had approached the hole 6up requiring two putts to claim victory. Her first took the Briton to within eight foot of the hole but her second skimmed the rim and stayed out.

Creamer needed to sink her putt from about six feet but again the ball hit the rim and rather than drop in, circled and came out to hand Matthew victory.

The Scot’s victory in County Meath came after Kerr was forced to pull out of her singles match against Karen Stupples because of a wrist injury and it meant Europe required 4 1/2 to claim the trophy.

Matthew told Sky Sports 2: “Fantastic. When I saw the draw I knew I was up against it.

“When I missed that putt I thought ’oh, we are going to another hole’.

“I knew not to give her a sniff, she is very tough.”

Of her form, Matthew added: “I just go out there and play my own game – just try and make pars.

“If I make birdie that’s good.”
