Quiros Cup hopes in tatters
Spain’s Alvaro Quiros was resigned to missing out on the Ryder Cup even before he teed off in the third round of the Johnnie Walker Championship today.
And he could banish any thoughts of a miracle comeback after the way he resumed at Gleneagles.
“I know that I’m not going to have chances for anything – for the Ryder Cup, for the tournament,” said the 27-year-old after just squeezing through the halfway cut.
“So it’s just a weekend. Unfortunately it’s just a weekend.”
Quiros had to win just to have a chance of ousting compatriot Miguel Angel Jimenez from the side, but a front nine of 39 this morning left him next to last, and on two over par he was 11 shots adrift of overnight leaders David Lynn, Gary Boyd and Julien Guerrier.
Jimenez had to finish outside the top 31 to be in danger from Quiros, but the 46-year-old was joint seventh after the opening two rounds.
With England’s Simon Dyson on the same mark, though, Jimenez could not relax.
If Dyson takes the title tomorrow, Jimenez would have to be in the top nine to hold him off in the cup race.
