Fog forces delay to USPGA Championship

Fog delayed the start of the USPGA Championship – final major of the golfing season – at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin today.

Visibility was down to a few yards on a course – already chosen as the venue for the 2020 Ryder Cup – which lies on the edge of Lake Michigan.

Play had been due to begin at 7am local time and with the practice range remaining open, the early starters were told that once conditions improved they would tee off 30 minutes later.

First of the European contingent in the draw was Scot Stephen Gallacher, who was in the second group of the day off the first hole.

Compatriot Martin Laird was two groups further back and then England’s Luke Donald had an original 7.40am time off the 10th tee.

Any lengthy delay raised the possibility of the opening round not being completed before nightfall.
