Singh pulls out of Open

India’s Jeev Milkha Singh today told of his disappointment at having to pull out of this week’s Open with a rib injury.

The world number 41 said he would not take on the best in the world when not fully fit.

The reigning Asian Tour number one missed the cut at last week’s Scottish Open but was set to lead the Asian challenge at Turnberry after claiming top 10 finishes at The European Open and The Celtic Manor Wales Open.

He also finished in fourth place at the WGC-CA Championship in Doral in March.

But the 37-year-old failed to overcome the effects of a niggling rib injury and will return home to recuperate.

“When I went out yesterday to play 18 holes, it was hurting. When I was taking deep breaths, it was also hurting and when that happens, you know it’s back,” said the 2006 Volvo Masters winner.

“I’m only 60% fit and I don’t want to play a major championship in that condition. My game is good but I just don’t want to take any chances this week.

“I don’t want to play in a tournament for the sake of playing in it but I want to be competing and be in contention. I want to be fit and I’ve always believed in that.”
