Hayes off to a good start in Roscommon

Tony Hayes (K Club) set the pace after the opening round of the 54 holes Irish Seniors Amateur Close Championship, sponsored by Tourism Malaysia, when he shot a one under par 71 at Roscommon Golf Club.

Hayes scored five birdies and four bogeys in his round which left him three shots ahead of his nearest rival, Liam McNamara (Woodbrook) who finished on 74.

Next on 75 are Maurice Kelly (Killeen) and Paddy Harrington (Muskerry) while Michael Quirke (Doneraile) who was runner-up in the Irish Seniors Amateur Open Championship at Bangor finished on 76 along with Peter Cowley (Cork) and Nigel Duke (Killiney)

A former international, Hayes opened with birdie threes at the first and second holes, added another at the par five seventh, but in between dropped shots at the third, fifth, eighth and ninth holes to turn in one-over-par 37.

Hayes had a birdie two at the 12th and another at the par four 14th hole. With pars on the remaining holes he came back in two-under-par 34 for his splendid round of 71.
