McIlroy wins best shot gong
Rory McIlroy has won the European Tour Shot-of-the-Month award for the second time this year.
The 19-year-old’s towering three-wood set up an eagle three during the second round of the WGC-CA Championship in Miami has been named the European Tour Shot of the Month for March.
With 268 yards to the flag and water guarding the front of the green, McIlroy was faced with a classic risk-reward dilemma and his gamble paid off as the ball nestled a few feet from the pin.
“It was one of the best shots I have ever hit to be honest,” he said. “I enjoy being aggressive on the golf course. I’m not going to change – I get a kick out of it.”
He also won in January for the last-hole bunker shot as he captured the Dubai Desert Classic.
Runner-up this time was Soren Kjeldsen’s 30-foot birdie putt on the 71st hole en route to victory in the Andalucian Open in Seville and third was Jeev Milkha Singh for his seven-iron tee shot to the par three 15th hole in the final round of the WGC-CA Championship.
The ball came to rest a few feet from the well-guarded pin and helped him finish fourth.
