Olazabal tempted by Ryder Cup captaincy
Jose Maria Olazabal has reiterated his desire to play in the 2010 Ryder Cup but admitted he would consider the European captaincy.
The Spaniard, who was Nick Faldoās deputy as Europe surrendered the trophy to the United States in Valhalla in September, suffered defeat in his first competition as European skipper as Asia romped to a 10-6 victory in The Royal Trophy at Amata Spring Country Club in Bangkok today.
The European committee meet in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday to discuss Faldoās successor and Olazabal is thought to be top of their wish list.
The 42-year-old would like to be a playing member of the team for the biennial showdown with the US at Celtic Manor in South Wales.
However, Olazabal hinted that if he fails to win his ongoing battle with rheumatism and return to competitive golf, he would like to take the lead role.
āI would love to be considered, Iām not going to deny that,ā he said.
āIāve never denied that being captain of the Ryder Cup is something really special, itās a privilege, but itās always been like that.
āItās always nice to be named but if now is the right time or not, Iām not sure.
āI would love to be playing ā if these guys allow me. I think maybe it is too soon (to be captain) but time will tell.ā
