Patience paying off for sizzling Quiros

Alvaro Quiros will be looking to maintain his stunning form today after another impressive round at the Castellon Masters.

The Spaniard, who won last week’s Portugal Masters for his second victory on the European Tour, shot a five-under-par 66 to move to nine under for the tournament after the second round.

That left him two shots behind leading trio Sergio Garcia, Soren Kjeldsen and Richard Finch, and well in contention.

The big-hitting 25-year-old was also fourth the week before Portugal in the Madrid Masters, but he cannot put the finger on a reason for such sparkling form as the season draws to a close.

“This week I’m feeling lucky again and very happy with the way I’m playing,” said Quiros. “Something changed after the Belfry (the British Masters), something in my head or my game – I don’t know what exactly.

“At the beginning of the season I was hitting a lot of birdies but also many double bogeys, and I think patience has a lot to do with this change.

“I have a very good philosophy. I just concentrate on what I have in front of me and don’t think about what’s behind me or what’s coming next.”

Quiros was initially unsure whether to play this event, believing it might have been better to practice for the season-ending Volvo Masters at Valderrama next week, but he is happy he did and is confident heading into the weekend.

“I wasn’t sure whether to play or not but I decided to because it’s in Spain, it’s Spanish promoters and I’m a friend of Sergio (Garcia, the tournament host),” he added.

“I hit the ball better today than yesterday. I missed a few putts but I made the shots I had to. Unfortunately the greens are not like yesterday because of all the rain and holing putts was difficult. But nine under is a good score for the weekend and I’m feeling good.”
