Ireland got off to a disappointing start on the opening day of the World Amateur Team Championship (Eisenhower Trophy) at the Royal Adelaide and Grange Golf Clubs in Australia.

Playing on the par-72 West Course at Grange, Jonathan Caldwell (Clandeboye) finished with a one-over-par 73, Paul Cutler (Portstewart) returned a two-over-par 74 and Shane Lowry (Esker Hills) finished with a three-over-par 75.

With two scores out of three to count each day, Ireland are placed at plus three for the Championship and are left with a lot of ground to make up on the leaders over the next three rounds of this 72 holes event.

“It was a very disappointing start for the team”, said Irish team captain Michael Burns, “but the three players are good enough to make big improvements over the next three days.”
