Faldo gambles on putting Harrington last

Nick Faldo has made one final gamble in the Ryder Cup - putting British Open and US PGA champion Padraig Harrington out last in the singles.

Down 9-7 with 12 points still at stake, there is the danger that Europe may already have handed over the trophy before their leading player has a chance to influence the result.

It was the same decision that Curtis Strange made at The Belfry in 2002. Tiger Woods was put out last there and it was all over before his game with Jesper Parnevik was decided.

Faldo has also put Lee Westwood 11th and top points-scorer Ian Poulter 10th.

If America start as Paul Azinger hopes, they will all three could still be playing when the celebrations are under way.

Poulter is up against Steve Stricker, Westwood against Ben Curtis and Harrington against Chad Campbell.

Sergio Garcia leads things off for Europe against Anthony Kim. Justin Rose, fourth on the list, is the one who takes on world number two Phil Mickelson.

Draw for the third day singles at the Ryder Cup (USA names first):

Anthony Kim v Sergio Garcia

Hunter Mahan v Paul Casey

Justin Leonard v Robert Karlsson

Phil Mickelson v Justin Rose

Kenny Perry v Henrik Stenson

Boo Weekley v Oliver Wilson

JB Holmes v Soren Hansen

Jim Furyk v Miguel Angel Jimenez

Stewart Cink v Graeme McDowell

Steve Stricker v Ian Poulter

Ben Curtis v Lee Westwood

Chad Campbell v Padraig Harrington.
