Garrido and Lawrie play-off

Dubliner Peter Lawrie went into another play-off for the Spanish Open when Ignacio Garrido sank a closing 30-foot birdie putt in Seville today.

Lawrie looked set to make it three Irish wins in a row on the European Tour when he birdied the long 13th and then had three more in succession from the 15th, the last of them a 40-foot putt.

With a 67 for 15-under-par the 34-year-old, winless in his first 174 Tour events, had to wait to see if Soren Hansen, Garrido or Miguel Angel Jimenez could catch him.

The Dane missed from 12 feet on the final green, Jimenez was out of it when he failed to hole his approach there, but Garrido – seven clear when he finished his course record 63 on Friday and three ahead with a round to play – brought a huge cheer from his home crowd when he holed.

Five years ago Lawrie lost a play-off for the same title to England’s Kenneth Ferrie. That was the closest he had come to victory on the European Tour, while Garrido had twice finished second in the event won by his father Antonio in 1972.
