Choi still in front at Sony Open
KJ Choi signed for a five-under-par 65 on the second day of the Sony Open to open a two-shot lead over Kevin Na.
After recording six birdies in a bogey-free opening round on Thursday, the Korean sank six more birdies against just a single bogey on the par-four second hole to remain atop the leaderboard.
Starting on the back nine, Choi entered the turn at two-under. He bogeyed number two but birdied four of his last five holes, including three straight to close out the round and post an 11-under 129 after two days.
Na was one shot better on the day, carding a six-under 64. He pulled within striking distance of Choi on the strength of seven birdies while only bogeying the par-four sixth.
Although he did it on the back nine, Na duplicated Choi’s feat by sinking birdies on his final three holes. He has a 131 at the midway point of the tournament.
Steve Marino shot a three-under 67 on Friday, recording five birdies and a pair of bogeys to stand three shots off the pace. He birdied three of the first five holes and added another at number eight before bogeying the par-five ninth.
Following another bogey at number 14, Marino closed the round with a birdie for an eight-under 132 overall.
Fred Funk and Jimmy Walker are tied for fourth at seven-under. Funk carded a 64 on Friday, while Walker shot a two-under 68.
Defending champion Paul Goydos missed the cut following a second-round three-over 73 and two-round total of three-over 143.
Last January, Goydos edged Luke Donald and Charles Howell by one stroke for his second career PGA Tour title and snapped a victory drought that dated more than 10 years.
