Harrington has sights set on second major

Padraig Harrington is happy to have won the Open Championship but it sounds like he won’t be happy if he doesn’t add a second major, and soon.

Harrington carded a solid one-under par 69 on Thursday in the first round of the PGA Championship and is eager to build on his breakthrough victory at Carnoustie of two weeks ago.

“Obviously since I’ve won the Open, things have moved very quickly,” Harrington said. “There was a lot to do at home and last week there were still things going on.

“The benefit is the fact I’ve won a major. You feel like you’ve won one, you can win two, you can move on from that.”

Of the 12 players who managed to shoot under-par on Thursday, three including Harrington have won majors.

John Daly has won a pair of majors but it is a surprise to see him in second at three-under.

Australian Geoff Ogilvy, who won the US Open in 2006 is tied with Harrington for sixth.

Whether Daly or Ogilvy can call upon their experience remains to be seen, but Harrington expects to get a boost from his Open win.

“There’s a certain level of confidence and I also feel there’s a certain level of adrenalin coming from having won on a certain level and a certain high from it,” Harrington said.

“I haven’t hit a wall from it as of yet. I keep a positive outlook.”

Graeme Storm is the man everyone is chasing after a five-under 65 and Harrington thinks the course will yield a low round here and there but for the most part, scoring will be hard and the winning score will reflect that.

“I think you will continue to see individuals have low rounds, individual guys going out and shooting low numbers,” Harrington said.

“But overall, for 72 holes, I think the golf course will be the winner and it will be like a typical major, it would be a single-figure winning score.”

A score Harrington seems to be confident he can attain.
