Irish Close champion knocked out at Lahinch

Lurgan's Gareth Shaw made two visits to the 20th before progressing to the last 16 of the South of Ireland Amateur Open at Lahinch.

Lurgan's Gareth Shaw made two visits to the 20th before progressing to the last 16 of the South of Ireland Amateur Open at Lahinch.

The North of Ireland champion, who came back from six down after 10 to beat Headfort's Pat Dempsey at the 20th in the morning, had to go to the 20th again to see off Lahinch hero Thomas Neenan in the last match of the day.

In the biggest shock of the day, The Island's Brendan Walton beat Irish Close champion Shane Lowry 3&2.

But Clare hurler Davy Fitzgerald failed to extend his dream run in the championship when he was beaten 5&4 by veteran Arthur Pierse in the third round.

Defending champion Simon Ward had to come from two down at the turn to beat Kilkenny’s Graham Nugent on the 17th.

Ward will now face West of Ireland champion Joe Lyons in tomorrow's fifth round.
