Bernhard Langer, joint 135th after an opening 76, was into a tie for third place after six holes of his final round at the BMW International Open in Munich today.

And it would have been better had the 49-year-old, trying to become the oldest winner in European Tour history, not missed a seven-foot eagle chance on the long sixth.

His third birdie took him to nine under par, two behind Swede Niclas Fasth and Portugal’s Jose-Filipe Lima, who parred the first two holes.

England’s Nick Dougherty, joint third overnight, failed to get up and down from sand on the third and bogeyed to slip to sixth on eight under.

Among those alongside him was Ernie Els, who played his first 12 holes in four under.
