Bader in uncharted territory

Beth Bader’s second sub-70 round has her in a very unfamiliar position.

Bader carded a six-under-par 66 to grab a one-shot lead following Friday’s second round of the Corning Classic.

With a halfway total of 13-under 131, Bader is one ahead of South Korea’s Young Kim, who continued her bogey-free start to the event with a 64 – the best round of the day.

“I’m in uncharted territory a little bit,” Bader said. “But I’ll tell you, I have had first-round leads in the past and haven’t played well the second day, so I feel very good about coming back and shooting the score I did today.

A member of the tour since 2001, Bader is in search of her first career win. Her previous best finish was a tie for fifth at the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic in 2002.

Kim had eight birdies to climb up from a tie for 11th while playing partner Paula Creamer is three shots off the pace.

The 20-year-old followed up a 66 on Thursday with a 68 to sit alone in third on 10 under.

“Overall, it really wasn’t as consistent as it was yesterday,” Creamer said. “I still made a lot of birdies, but I left a couple of shots out there.

Charlotta Sorenstam, the first-round leader and sister of Swedish superstar Annika, struggled with four bogeys for a 73 to fall into a tie for 11th at 137.
