Francella wins maiden LPGA title
Meaghan Francella birdied the fourth play-off hole to claim her maiden LPGA title at the rain-delayed MasterCard Classic in Mexico City.
Having had her final round put back a day due to rain, the American shot a three-under-par 69 at the Bosque Real Country Club to finish in a tie for first with Annika Sorenstam on 11-under.
The Swede had finished strongly as she chased a third successive win in the tournament with a 66, but Francella prevailed over the four-hole play-off.
Francella and Sorenstam were among 31 players who did not tee off on Sunday due to two weather delays.
Sorenstam appeared determined to claim her 70th career LPGA tournament title and had four birdies on the front nine and three more on the back before taking a bogey at the 16th.
Francella, who was making only her sixth start on the LPGA Tour, birdied the 16th to move back into a share of the lead with Sorenstam.
Stacy Prammanasudh, who began the day one stroke behind Francella, carded a 71 and tied for third with Kyeong Bae (67) and Angela Stafford (67) at eight-under.
Crowd favourite Lorena Ochoa of Mexico shot a 70 to finish at seven-under.
