Hume surges ahead in Singapore
Barry Hume held the clubhouse lead midway through the second round of the Clariden Leu Singapore Masters today after carding a three-under-par 69 at Laguna National Golf and Country Club to move to 10-under 134 for the tournament.
The 25-year-old from Glasgow followed up his opening-round 65 at the Classic course on Thursday by firing five birdies and a double bogey on the more difficult Masters course to move to the top of the leaderboard in the US$1.1m (€830,000) event, which is co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours.
The 2002 Scottish Amateur champion began well with three birdies at the first four holes and was 12 under after further birdies on the 15th and 16th before a double bogey on the par-three 17th blotted his card.
Ireland’s Peter Lawrie surged to the top of the leaderboard early in the day after making four birdies on the front nine of the Masters to reach the turn at 10-under.
However, the Dubliner double-bogeyed the par-three 12th as he carded a two-under 70, finishing the day on eight under, two shots behind Hume.
Scotland’s Ross Bain followed up his opening-round 69 with a 70 on the Masters, while England’s Simon Khan shot 70 on the Classic as they moved to five-under for the tournament.
Simon Dyson fired six birdies on the Classic course but a bogey and double bogey at the final two holes saw him reach the halfway mark of the tournament on four-under.
Nick Dougherty, the 2005 winner, had a mixed round of 72 on the Classic with an eagle, four birdies and six bogeys as he remained on three under, one shot behind defending champion Mardan Mamat of Singapore, who had four bogeys and three birdies in his 73 on the Classic.
Ian Woosnam was one-under after a round of 70 on the Classic but Darren Clarke looked likely to miss the cut as he went to four-over after carding his second consecutive 74.
Anton Haig was brought back down to earth after his victory last week at the Johnnie Walker Classic as the South African youngster quadruple-bogeyed the second in a dismal round of 81 on the Classic that put him 11-over for the tournament.
