World number one Annika Sorenstam beat American Pat Hurst 70-74 in an 18-hole play-off today to win her third US Women’s Open at Newport Country Club in Rhode Island.

The pair had tied on even par 284 after the regulation 72 holes, but it was a lop-sided play-off.
