Bad weather suspended play in the Memorial tournament at Muirfield Village for the second day running today.

American left-hander Steve Flesch was among 30 players back at the course to complete their first round at 8.30am and a par on the 444-yard last gave him a six under 66 and a one-stroke lead in Ohio.

Flesch was soon back in action again. He bogeyed the second after finding the water with his approach, but just before the stoppage made a 13-foot birdie putt on the next.

That restored his slender advantage over compatriot Sean O’Hair, while joint third on three under were a group which included David Howell, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Carl Pettersson.

The Swede was the only one of that quartet who had commenced his second round and parred the first five holes.

Ian Poulter, meanwhile, finished with a first round 73. Left with four holes to play on his return he double-bogeyed the 17th, but birdied the 18th.
