Brilliant Clarke leaps up leaderboard
Darren Clarke, the only player to score 60 in Europe twice, now has two rounds of 63 to his name on the US Tour.
Clarkeās brilliant performance in the third round of the Bay Hill Invitational in Orlando lifted him all the way from 39th into a tie for second ā and alongside him after a 67 was Englandās Greg Owen.
That was the good news for the Ulsterman. The bad was that with a 67 of his own Australian Rod Pampling took a four-stroke lead into the final day.
Not that that troubled Clarke at all. He was content with putting in such a display after more than a year in which golf has taken a back seat to his wife Heatherās fight with cancer.
āSheās having a pretty tough battle at the minute,ā said Clarke. āShe had a couple of weeks of very intensive treatment two weeks ago for another situation, but sheās battling hard.
āAs you can probably see from my results, itās affecting me quite a bit. Itās bound to.
āThings happen that youāve got to re-assess, take a step back and take a look at them. Itās a pretty tough thing that weāre having to deal with at the moment.
āGolf is not really at the top of my list, itās nowhere near the top of my priorities, but still at the same time Iām not just going out to make up a number, I want to try and compete.ā
And that he did with two opening birdies, then six in a row from the ninth (the last of them almost a hole-in-one) and finally a two-putt birdie on the long 16th.
Taking a great interest in whether he and Owen can catch Pampling will be Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam.
Clarke is currently 13th in the world points list from which five of the side will be picked, but a third US Tour victory would put him into that top five.
The match, of course, takes place at the K Club west of Dublin in September and Clarke, who shot one of his 60s there in the 1999 European Open, describes it as the ābiggest sporting event they have ever had in Irelandā.
āYouāve got the eyes of the world all of a sudden focusing on The K Club. I donāt know if many of you have been to Ireland or not, but they are very hospitable people, like to have a drink and a bit of fun. Itās going to be an unbelievable atmosphere.
āThe Irish are going to be very welcoming to everybody thatās there, so weāll be pleased when we see the people that made an effort to travel to Ireland. I think itās going to be a fantastic event.
āOf course I want to be a part of it. But I donāt know if Iām going to play next week, I donāt know if Iām going to play the week after. Itās too far ahead for me to have any idea whatās going on.
āSo hence thereās no point ā I donāt look at the Ryder Cup points list.
āIf I qualify, then great. If not, then the fact that I havenāt qualified, I wouldnāt want to put myself in that position anyway to be part of the team because you donāt want to be there if youāre not on top of your game.
āIf I was close to making the team, that would be a different scenario, but if I was far off from making the team, the last place I would want to be is standing on the first tee under that amount of pressure and not quite knowing where itās going.
āIād rather have a few pints of Guinness and watch it on TV.ā
Owen is down in 76th place in the Ryder Cup race, but that is partly explained by the fact that it is only in the past month that he has rejoined the European tour and become eligible again.
Victory at Bay Hill would catapult the Mansfield golfer into the top 10 ā and would also make him the first European to win there.
āFirst time for everything,ā he said when told he was trying to break the duck.
āI had a few back issues at the start of the year (he had surgery in 2004), but something clicked last month recently and my confidence is getting up.
āIāve got a very good attitude at the moment, Iām really relaxed. Iāve got nothing to lose. Iām playing well and when I won the British Masters things just happened ā a few good lies in the rough and a few good putts drop at the right time.
āThe golfing gods will tell me if itās my time to win.ā
On Clarkeās round he commented: āDarren has a few issues going on at home with his personal life and I think itās fantastic he can come away and play as well as heās done.
āEverybodyās thinking about him and Heather and wishing them well. Itās terrible for anybody with that kind of disease, but to come out and shoot that kind of score on this golf course is incredible.ā
