Els makes his move

Ernie Els today moved into contention in the delayed Dunhill Championship in South Africa.

Els, playing his second event since recovering from knee surgery, was among the 75 players forced to complete their first rounds this morning after a thunderstorm disrupted play on Thursday.

The former Open champion completed a one-under round of 71 and then picked up five birdies in the first 11 holes of his second round to improve to six under.

Fellow South African Michiel Bothma leads on 10 under after 27 holes with Scotland’s Doug McGuigan and Titch Moore three shots behind.

Overnight leader Phillip Archer, who completed his 66 before the afternoon storm yesterday, had yet to begin his second round.

After switching putters overnight and completing his round this morning, Denmark’s Soren Hansen was in danger of being disqualified but instead given a four-stroke penalty, changing his score from a 78 to 82.
