American Jim Furyk chipped in from the fringe for a birdie to win a four-way play-off for the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City at the second extra hole.

It was probably no more than the world number number seven deserved after missing a heartbreaking five-foot par putt on the same 18th green minutes earlier which cost him victory in regulation play.

Furyk jumped for joy as his ball dropped in, delighted at seeing off the challenge of defending champion and world number four Retief Goosen, world number eight Adam Scott and Ryder Cup star Darren Clarke.

Goosen went out at the first extra hole after missing a five-footer for par so the remaining three went back to the 18th tee and despite Scott and Clarke both finding the green in two they could not hole their birdie attempts and Furyk nipped in to claim the £690,000 first prize.

Clarke was the only one of the quartet to break par on the final day at the Gary Player Country Club, shooting six birdies – including a chip in at the 17th - and three bogeys in a round of 69.

Furyk and Goosen both had level-par 72s while Australian Scott carded a 73.

Joint overnight leader Angel Cabrera had a disastrous 80 to drop well out of contention while Tim Clark had to hole his third at the last to join the play-off but duffed his chip and ended with a bogey for a four under total.
