Darren Clarke recovered from a tricky position at the start of his second round to keep hold of his overnight lead at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City.

Jim Furyk had birdied the first to hand him a share of the lead, and Clarke looked likely to lose his position at the summit when he veered off the fairway on the second.

However, Ulsterman Clarke recovered par – ensuring he still had not dropped a shot in the tournament – before nudging ahead with a birdie at the next to leave him six under.

Furyk, 35, did have a chance to birdie the third himself but was just wide with his 15-foot putt.

Angel Cabrera moved into third after three birdies and a bogey in his opening five holes at the Gary Player Country Club to keep him within sight of Clarke at three under.

A clutch of players were a shot behind Cabrera, including Tim Clark, Luke Donald, Retief Goosen and Adam Scott.
