Griffiths looking good for tour card

England's David Griffiths birdied the last hole of his fifth round to edge into the lead at the European Tour’s qualifying school final in Spain.

As play resumed at San Roque following Monday’s early finish due to thunderstorms, the 25-year-old completed a 68 for an 11-under aggregate of 349.

Griffiths leads by one from Robert Rock, with Tom Whitehouse a stroke further back on 351.

Oliver Whiteley and Shaun Webster share a distant fourth place on one under.

Fellow Englishman David Dixon, the leading amateur in the 2001 Open championship at Lytham, carded a 71 to finish level par while former Ryder Cup player Jarmo Sandelin – a five-time winner on the European circuit – remains in the card-winning places on three over despite a 74.

The current qualifying mark stands at five over par and Scotland’s David Drysdale is three shots adrift after a 71.

Drysdale missed out on retaining his tour card by just £400 (€594.30) this season and the 30-year-old from Dunbar needs to produce a rousing finish in today’s final round to avoid further disappointment.
