England’s David Howell saw off the formidable challenge of Tiger Woods to win the inaugural HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai.

The 30-year-old’s final round of 68 gave him a 20-under-par, three-shot victory over the world number one and a cheque for £475,899 (€700,000).

An eagle at the last hole helped England’s Nick Dougherty leapfrog a chasing pack to snatch third place, six shots behind Howell, alongside Nick O’Hern of Australia, while Fijian Vijay Singh tied with Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn in fifth.
