Robert Rock’s bid for a swift return to the European Tour gathered pace at the Emporda club near Girona in Spain.

The 28-year-old from Birmingham, who finished fourth in the 2003 British Masters, produced the best performance of the day with a seven-under-par 63 in the second stage of qualifying school.

From 44th place at the start of the day, Rock finished the second round in fifth, three shots behind leader Cedric Menut of France.
