Victory hoists McGinley into top 20

Paul McGinley has moved into the world’s top 20 for the first time as a result of his victory in the Volvo Masters.

Colin Montgomerie’s third-place finish, however, was not enough to lift him a single place.

McGinley improves from 26th to 18th, while Montgomerie, who would have leaped into the top 10 by combining his eighth Order of Merit title with a win in the event, stays at 15th.

Runner-up Sergio Garcia remains sixth, while Luke Donald, who tied with Montgomerie, goes to 13th just ahead of Padraig Harrington.

The big mover of the week, though, was Swede Carl Pettersson, whose first US Tour victory takes him from 130th to 61st.

Pettersson, who switched from Europe to America two years ago, would also have gone third in the European Ryder Cup table if he had been a member of the circuit.

But, controversially, he is ineligible for the match at present because, like Justin Rose, Greg Owen, Fredrik Jacobson, Jesper Parnevik, Alex Cejka and some other US-based players, he resigned his membership.

Rose and Cejka are intending to rejoin for next season – starting next week - but it remains to be seen whether any more do.

Pettersson, born in Gothenburg and raised in North Carolina, said he had always dreamed of playing and winning on the US Tour.

But after holding off Chad Campbell to win by one he said: “It was a little easier in the dreams.”
