Monty making progress

Colin Montgomerie cut Kenneth Ferrie’s lead from five to three shots in the first six holes of the Dunhill Links Championship final round at St Andrews today.

Montgomerie, runner-up to the Northumberland golfer at the European Open in July and to Tiger Woods in the Open over the Old Course two weeks later, holed a birdie putt of nearly 35 feet at the second.

Then, after both had birdied the long fifth, Ferrie three-putted from just short of the next green.

He was 13 under par, Montgomerie 10 under and Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez third at eight under.
