Extra club earns Seve penalty for Britain and Ireland
Britain and Ireland shot themselves in the foot during play at the Seve Trophy event today when Welshman Bradley Dredge discovered after teeing off at the first that he had 15 clubs in his bag - one more than allowed. A fairway wood should not have been there.
In match play it meant loss of hole rather than the two-shot penalty suffered in stroke play, so Lafeber and Canonica went one up.
Fellow Welshman Ian Woosnam made the same blunder at the 2001 Open, the error being spotted when he was joint leader with 17 holes to play.
Fasth and Hanson remained one ahead after four, Harrington missing a three-footer, but Howell and Casey made a good start. Howell won the first with a birdie and Casey followed suit at the next.
Positions:
Padraig Harrington & Paul McGinley 1 down to Niclas Fasth & Peter Hanson (after 4 holes)
Paul Casey & David Howell 3 up on Miguel Angel Jimenez & Jose Maria Olazabal (4)
Colin Montgomerie & Graeme McDowell 2 down to Thomas Bjorn & Henrik Stenson (3)
Stephen Dodd & Bradley Dredge A/S Maarten Lafeber & Emanuele Canonica (2)
