Romero eyes unprecedented double
Argentina’s Eduardo Romero is aiming to make history this week by becoming the first player to win on the European Tour and European Seniors Tour in the same season.
Romero completed the first leg of a possible double with a dominant eight-shot victory in the Travis Perkins Senior Masters at Wentworth on Sunday.
Now he will look to take that form into the BMW International Open in Munich and emulate American Craig Stadler, who remains the only player to have won on both the US Champions Tour and US PGA Tour – his victories coming on consecutive weeks during the 2003 season.
The 51-year-old would also be the oldest winner on tour, surpassing the record held by Ireland’s Des Smyth, who was 48 years and 34 days old when he triumphed at the Madeira Island Open.
“It would be beautiful to do that,” admitted Romero. "I know it will be difficult to win this week but I have a lot of confidence to play here in Munich.
“I needed to win a tournament, as it had been three years since my last one, so it was great to win at Wentworth.”
His last success on the European Tour came at Loch Lomond in 2002 when he beat Swede Fredrik Jacobson in a play-off to claim the Barclays Scottish Open, although he also finished second in the British Masters last year.
“I have been doing yoga, exercise and dieting,” he added. "I have lost seven kilos and feel very strong. I am hitting th ball longer now than I did 10 years ago.”
