Irishman Paul McGinley is firmly in contention at the TCL Classic in China after firing a 69 to come in at 10 under.

McGinley bogeyed two of his first five holes but recoveed to add six more birdies to the eight he shot yesterday.

Mexico’s Alex Quiroz fired a second successive 65 to take charge of the event this morning.

Quiroz fired an eagle and six birdies in his second round at the Yalong Bay Golf Club in Sanya, Hainan Island, to return to the clubhouse on 14 under par.

He led by two strokes from Korea’s Gwang-Soo Choi with Johan Edfors, Keng-Chi Lin and Wen The Lu a further shot back.

Englishman Paul Casey, who shared the lead on eight under after a 64 yesterday, was among the later starters and went through his first six holes in level par.

Casey, making his first appearance outside America this year, started badly with a bogey at the second but recovered with a birdie at the par-three third.
