Four-way tie for lead in Sony Open
Stewart Cink, Brett Quigley, Tom Byrum and Hank Kuehne share the lead on 66 after the windswept first round of the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club.
They are one shot clear of Jonathan Kaye, Paul Azinger, Chad Campbell, Shigeki Maruyama, Tom Lehman, Jeff Sluman, Woody Austin, Justin Rose and Andrew Magee.
Vijay Singh was three behind after bogeying the par-five 18, while two-time defending champion Ernie Els joined 55-year-old Tom Kite at one-over 71.
Retief Goosen, meanwhile, fought back to shoot 72 after posting a quintuple bogey at the first hole, where he carved two tee balls out-of-bounds to the right.
Englandâs Paul Casey avoided any heckling but struggled in his first round on US soil since saying he hated Americans. He shot 75.
Fifteen-year-old Michelle Wie could only match Caseyâs 75, which left her tied for 120th.
Wie, who missed the cut by one stroke last year, had a disappointing day, although 75 was nothing to be ashamed of, especially after the way she battled back to par her final seven holes, after dropping five shots in five holes mid-round.
âLast year was a lot easier than this year, with the conditions,â she said.
âI easily could have made five or six more bogeys, but I hung in there and hit it really good. At least I am not last.â
âIt is tough for the boys here, you know. It is going to be tough for a girl too,â Singh said.
