Monty on target for World Challenge win
Colin Montgomerie fired a four-under-par 67 to take a two-shot lead from Tiger Woods and two other Americans at the Target World Challenge in California.
Montgomerie, who sparked Europe to a record-setting Ryder Cup victory over the United States three months ago, shared the lead with Woods when he teed off for the third round.
But a 67 moved him to 13-under on 200 at the 6,988-yard Sherwood Country Club course.
Woods got off to a slow start and could not keep pace with Montgomerie and he finished on 202, level tied with Jim Furyk and Jay Haas, both of whom shot 67s.
Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, another European Ryder Cup hero, carded a best-of-the-day 66 to take fifth spot at 10-under on 203, one stroke better than Ireland’s Padraig Harrington (67).
The top six players all have carded three rounds in the 60s.
Well off the pace at two-under on 211 is world number one Vijay Singh who has bounced back from an opening 74 with a 69 and 68.
Tied for last place at four-over on 217 is John Daly, the PGA Tour’s Comeback Player of the Year, who struggled to a four-over 75.
