It is not often that the world’s 434th-ranked player is a centre of attention at the start of a major but that is the case today at the US Open as David Duval hits his first competitive shots since November.

The former world number one, British Open champion just three years ago and still aged 32, fell out of love with the “long, hard and lonely” life on tour and decided he had had enough.
