Drummond claims remarkable win

Scottish golfer Scott Drummond, a lowly 435th in the world and 186th on the European tour, pulled off an unbelievable victory in the Volvo PGA championship at Wentworth today.

The day after his 30th birthday, Drummond captured the first prize of nearly £420,000 (€629,607) when he beat Argentina’s Angel Cabrera by two with a magical closing round of 64.

The former England amateur international – he switched to Scotland on turning professional in 1996 – had never previously finished higher than 16th in any tournament on the circuit.

He became the first player to win the tour’s flagship event on his debut since Arnold Palmer in 1975.

Palmer was a legend by then, whereas Drummond’s previous biggest cheque on tour was for a mere £8,288 (€12,424).

Drummond had missed the halfway cut in seven of his previous eight starts and did not know he was playing in the event until eight days before the start, having originally been the fourth reserve.

Swede Joakim Haeggman finished third and four-time winner Nick Faldo’s closing 66 gave him a share of fourth with Darren Clarke and 2002 winner Anders Hansen.
