Tiger in the woods

Tiger Woods still gave himself a chance of winning his fourth Masters with a round to go at Augusta National today.

But he was surely close to conceding yet another major championship defeat when he bogeyed two of his first three holes.

There was a birdie four in between, but at four over with 15 to play the world number one was 10 adrift of leaders Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco.

Woods, whose last major success was the 2002 US Open, bogeyed the opening hole for the third time in the week, on this occasion hooking his drive into the trees and putting his approach into sand.

Just ahead of him Justin Rose, centre of attention the first two days but deep in the pack after his third-round 81, lost further ground when he three-putted the third, leaving his 25-foot birdie attempt five feet short.

It was all about restoring confidence for the 23-year-old, but there were other Europeans right in the thick of the action.

Paul Casey, trying to become the first Masters debutant to win since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979, was alone in third two behind Mickelson and DiMarco and in the group one further back was 46-year-old Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer, attempting to take over from Jack Nicklaus as the oldest- ever winner.
