Swede leads West of Ireland qualifiers

Sweden’s Oskar Henningsson led the qualifiers in the West of Ireland Championship at Rosses Point thanks to a superb course record equalling 65.

The 18 year old fired seven birdies and had just one bogey on his card - a three putt from inside 15 feet at the sixth - to finish on nine under par and five shots clear of Dunmurry’s Darren Crowe.

His 36-hole total of 133 was the lowest two-round qualifying score in the history of the event at Rosses Point while the cut fell at record low of 149, seven over par.

Playing in the last match on the course, the Swede needed an eagle two at the 367-yard 18th to set a new course best but his pitch from 63 yards ran past the edge of the hole and finished just two feet away.

Crowe shot a second successive 69 to finish second on four under par with Holywood’s Harry Diamond (68), the Island’s Eoin O’Sullivan (69) and Karlberg (74) tied for third on three under par 139.

Four players on 149 failed to get through on countback but there was no luck for reigning European Amateur champion Brian McElhinney who slumped to a 79 for a 151 total.
