Woods retains Tour title

World number one Tiger Woods has been named US PGA Tour player of the year for the fifth consecutive season despite not winning a Major or topping the money list for the first time since 1998.

Woods picked up his sixth award in seven years for leading the tour with five victories and extending his streak of consecutive cuts made to 114.

He beat money-list winner Vijay Singh, who won four times and finished with $7.57m, $900,000 more than Woods, US Open winner Jim Furyk, Masters champion Mike Weir and Davis Love III.

The last player to win player of the year honours without capturing a major was Greg Norman in 1995.

“I think everyone is basing my performances on 2000, which was a very magical year and very hard to duplicate,” Woods said.

“This year was disappointing from a Major standpoint but I won five times on tour including two World Golf titles.

“I think you have to base it on wins, the money list and scoring average.”

Open champion Ben Curtis captured the Rookie of the Year award after his stunning success at Royal St George’s in only his 16th PGA Tour Event.
