Kjeldsen ahead with nine to play

Danish golfer Soren Kjeldsen took only a two-stroke lead into the final nine holes of the Diageo Championship at Gleneagles today.

An opening bogey cut the 28-year-old’s overnight five-shot advantage to three with Scot Alastair Forsyth holing a five-foot birdie putt, but by the seventh the gap had grown to five again.

Then, however, there was another two-stroke swing at the eighth and Forsyth’s second successive birdie at the ninth gave him real hopes of the first prize.

English pair John Bickerton and Paul Broadhurst were three behind and Colin Montgomerie, joint second after two birdies in his first four holes, fifth on three under, four back.

Graeme McDowell finished three over after a 72, Philip Walton finished nine over after a 77 while Gary Murphy also shot a 77 to finish 10 over.
