Huston and Maggert share lead in Florida
John Huston and Jeff Maggert grabbed a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Franklin Templeton Shoot-out at Tiburon Golf Club, Naples, Florida.
Huston and Maggert had an eagle, seven birdies and a bogey in an eight-under-par 64 in the alternate-shot format, to take a slim lead from the teams of Rocco Mediate and Lee Janzen, and Mark O’Meara and John Cook.
Mediate and Janzen – both of whom attended Florida Southern university – had seven birdies during a bogey-free seven-under 65 as they seek their first Shoot-out titles.
Janzen was a runner-up with Hale Irwin in 1996 and Chip Beck in 1995.
O’Meara – who won the inaugural tournament with Curtis Strange at Sherwood Country Club in 1989 – and Cook also shot a 65, a stroke better than the teams of Steve Elkington and Peter Jacobson, Mark Calcavecchia and Andrew Magee, and Matt Kuchar and David Gossett.
David Toms and Stewart Cink were another stroke back at 67, with Jerry Kelly and Scott Hoch, Fred Funk and Len Mattiace, Dudley Hart and Jeff Sluman, and host Greg Norman and Fred Couples at 68.
Two-time defending champions Scott McCarron and Brad Faxon were last in the 12-team field after a 71.
The second round is a best-ball format, followed by a scramble on Sunday.
The teams are chasing a $500,000 first prize.
